Water-Stained Textured Ceiling Repair in a Dining Room and Living Area
This job started with brown water rings spread across a textured ceiling. The stains ran over the dining room, with its tan walls, white chair rail and picture-frame wainscoting, and into the next room. One photo shows the stains clearly under a hanging light, with the furniture wrapped in plastic and the brick fireplace covered. In progress, two painters stand on work platforms over drop cloths. One works compound into the ceiling with a wide taping knife while the other seals a doorway with plastic and blue tape. Another photo shows the whole ceiling dotted with fresh white patches where each stain was treated and spot primed before the final coat. The crown molding, corner blocks and window trim stay in place and protected through the work. The aim is one even, flat white ceiling with the texture blended so the old stain marks no longer show through.
How We Repaired and Repainted This Stained Ceiling
- We covered the floors with drop cloths, wrapped the furniture and fireplace in plastic, and sealed doorways with plastic sheeting and tape to keep dust in one area.
- We checked that the source of the leak had been fixed and that the drywall was dry and firm before starting any repair over the stained areas.
- We scraped loose texture and paint, then used a taping knife to apply joint compound where the ceiling surface had bubbled or softened from the water.
- We sanded the patches and blended them into the surrounding ceiling texture so the repaired spots would not stand out under side light from the windows.
- We sealed every stain and patch with a stain-blocking primer, which keeps brown water marks from bleeding back through the new ceiling paint.
- We rolled the full ceiling with flat white paint from wall to wall, cutting in along the crown molding, so the color and sheen look even across the whole room.
Ceiling Paint Colors Similar to This Repaired Flat White Ceiling
Here are similar white ceiling colors to consider for a room like this. They are suggestions only and not the exact color used on this ceiling.
Sherwin-Williams Extra White SW 7006
A clean, bright white that suits a flat ceiling. It reflects light well and sits neatly above white crown molding like the trim in this dining room.
Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace OC-65
A crisp white with very little undertone. It keeps a repaired ceiling looking fresh above tan walls and white wainscoting.
Sherwin-Williams Pure White SW 7005
A slightly softer white. It blends well when ceilings meet warm wall colors, like the tan walls seen in these rooms.
Questions About Fixing Water Stains on a Ceiling
Why do water stains come back after I paint over them?
Water leaves minerals and tannins in the drywall that bleed through regular latex paint. Without a stain-blocking primer, the brown ring often shows again within days. Sealing the stain first, then painting, is the standard fix. The leak itself must be repaired first, or new stains will form in the same place.
Do I need to repaint the whole ceiling or just the stained area?
Painting only the stained spot often leaves a patch that looks brighter or a different sheen than the old paint. Ceilings age and yellow over time. Rolling the whole ceiling from wall to wall usually gives the cleanest result, especially on a large open ceiling with side light from windows.
Can textured ceilings be repaired without looking patched?
Yes, in most cases. The painter matches the texture over the repaired area with compound or a texture product, then primes and paints the full ceiling. Small differences can show in low, raking light. A careful blend and a full coat of flat paint helps the repair disappear into the rest of the ceiling.
