Cherry Kitchen Cabinets Painted White with a Sage Green Island and a Two-Story Great Room Repaint

This was a large, whole home job that started in the kitchen. The in progress photos show cabinet doors hanging on rolling racks in our shop, some in white and some in a deep green. Back in the house, the cabinet boxes are already white, the island base is dark green, and plastic and tape cover the counters and floors. The after photos show white raised panel uppers, a white range hood with vertical trim lines, and brushed brass bar pulls over black granite. The island is a muted sage green with glass front doors, brass pulls, and turned feet on light oak floors. In the two story great room, the walls are a warm greige, the crown molding and window and French door trim are a dark charcoal, and the fireplace shiplap and brick are white. Two bathroom vanities were also refinished, one white and one green. The photos were taken in Nov 2021.

How We Refinished This Kitchen and Painted the Great Room

  1. We removed every cabinet door and drawer front, numbered them, and brought them to our shop, where they hung on racks for cleaning, sanding, and spraying.
  2. In the kitchen, we covered counters, appliances, and floors with plastic and paper, then degreased and sanded the cabinet boxes and island where they stayed in place.
  3. The cherry surfaces got a bonding primer so the white and green finish coats would grip the old factory finish and the wood tone would not bleed through.
  4. Doors and drawer fronts were sprayed in the shop with two finish coats, while the boxes, crown, and island base were brushed and rolled on site to match.
  5. In the great room, we used tall ladders to cut in the crown and window trim in dark charcoal, then rolled the walls in greige and coated the fireplace white.
  6. Once the shop pieces cured, we rehung the doors, installed the brass pulls, refinished both bathroom vanities, and did a final walk through for touch ups.

Paint Colors Similar to These White Cabinets and Sage Green Island

Below are similar colors to consider for white cabinets, a green island, and dark trim. They are not the exact paints used in this home.

Sherwin-Williams Pure White SW 7005

A soft, balanced white close to these upper cabinets and range hood, clean beside black granite without looking cold or gray.

Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog SW 9130

A muted gray green similar to this island, calm enough for a large piece of cabinetry and a good partner for brass hardware.

Sherwin-Williams Black Fox SW 7020

A deep brown black that fits the dark crown molding and French door trim in the great room against warm greige walls.

Questions About Painting Cherry Cabinets White

Will the red tone of cherry cabinets bleed through white paint?

It can if the prep is skipped. Cherry and other stained woods may have tannins or tints that show through light paint. A good stain blocking or bonding primer seals the surface first. With proper primer and two finish coats, white cabinets should stay clean and even over time.

Why are cabinet doors sprayed off site?

Spraying doors in a shop keeps dust and overspray out of your home and gives a smoother, more even finish. The doors can dry flat or on racks without being bumped. Meanwhile, the cabinet boxes are painted on site, so the kitchen is only partly out of use.

Is a two-tone kitchen with a colored island still a good choice?

A painted island in green, navy, or gray is a popular way to add color without committing the whole kitchen. White perimeter cabinets keep the room bright, and the island becomes a focal point. Choosing a muted shade helps the look feel lasting rather than tied to one trend.
