Red Brick Cottage Painted Warm Beige with Tan Trim and Tudor Style Gable Accents

This one and a half story cottage has an arched front entry, a steep front gable, and an arched window on the second floor. The before photo, taken in snow, shows multicolor red brick, light beige vinyl in the upper gable, dark brown fascia and window trim, and a cream storm door. The brick color made the home feel dark and heavy next to its neighbors. In the after photo, the brick is painted a warm, light beige that still lets the brick pattern show. The window surrounds, fascia, and a band along the foundation are a deeper tan, which outlines the shape of the house. The upper gable now reads light with tan trim boards and a round vent, giving a Tudor style look. The arched front door is a dark brown, and the arched upper window is now framed in tan. Fresh mulch and fall mums finish the front bed. The photos were taken in Oct 2021.

How We Painted This Brick Cottage, Step by Step

  1. We pressure washed the brick and trim to remove dirt, loose mortar dust, and mildew, then gave the masonry enough dry time before any coating went on.
  2. Loose or cracked mortar joints were checked, and gaps around windows and trim were caulked so water would not get behind the new paint.
  3. We masked the windows, front door, light fixture, gas meter, and walkway with plastic and tape, and covered plantings near the foundation.
  4. A masonry primer made for brick went on first to seal the porous surface and help the finish coats bond evenly across old and new mortar.
  5. Two coats of exterior masonry paint in warm beige were applied to the brick, worked into the mortar joints so no red showed through.
  6. We brushed the window surrounds, fascia, gable trim, and foundation band in tan, then painted the arched front door a dark brown to finish.

Paint Colors Similar to This Beige Painted Brick

These are similar colors to consider for painted brick, tan trim, and a dark door. They are not the exact colors used on this cottage.

Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige SW 7036

A warm, light beige similar to this painted brick, soft enough to calm busy red brick without looking stark or bright white.

Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige SW 7037

A deeper tan that works for window surrounds, fascia, and Tudor style gable boards, outlining the house shape against lighter brick.

Sherwin-Williams Van Dyke Brown SW 7041

A rich dark brown close to this arched front door, adding weight at the entry and pairing well with tan and beige.

Questions About Painting Exterior Brick

Is it a good idea to paint red brick?

Painting brick can update an older home and hide mismatched repairs. The tradeoff is that painted brick needs repainting over time, while bare brick does not. Using a breathable masonry paint and good prep helps moisture escape. It is a choice worth thinking through, since removing paint from brick is hard.

What kind of paint is used on brick?

Exterior masonry or elastomeric paints made for brick are common choices. These products are designed to handle the texture and alkalinity of masonry. Many painters use a masonry primer first. The right product depends on the age of the brick, the mortar, and how much moisture the wall sees.

How long does painted brick last?

With proper cleaning, priming, and quality masonry paint, painted brick often looks good for many years before it needs a fresh coat. Sun exposure, water from gutters, and plants against the wall all affect how long it lasts. Keeping gutters clear and trimming shrubs back helps the finish hold up.
