Oak Kitchen Cabinets Painted White with Living and Dining Rooms Repainted

This whole-home interior job covered the kitchen, living room and dining room, photographed in Jun 2021. Before the work, the kitchen had golden oak cabinets with the doors off and open shelves on display, and the dining room had oak crown, casing, chair rail and box trim panels taped off with blue tape. The living room had two teal accent walls, a red brick fireplace with a brass surround and oak mantel, and oak casing around a wide opening. In the after photos, the kitchen cabinets and island are bright white with arched raised-panel doors and silver hardware. The dining room trim and box panels below the chair rail are crisp white, and the walls are a soft greige. In the living room, the teal walls now match the rest of the room in a warm gray, the brick fireplace is painted a medium gray, and the mantel and crown molding are white.

How We Painted the Kitchen Cabinets and Trim in This Home

  1. We took off the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and hardware, labeled each piece, and covered the counters, appliances and tile floor in the kitchen.
  2. In the dining and living rooms, we taped every edge of the oak crown, casing, chair rail and box panels and covered the carpet and furniture.
  3. Oak cabinets and trim were cleaned, scuff sanded and primed with a stain-blocking primer so wood tannins and grain would not bleed through the white.
  4. Gaps between trim and walls were caulked, and nail holes in the trim were filled and sanded smooth before any finish paint went on.
  5. Cabinets, island and trim received two coats of white paint, with light sanding between coats for a smooth surface on doors and drawer fronts.
  6. The walls were rolled in two coats of warm gray, and the red brick fireplace was primed and painted a medium gray with a white mantel.
  7. We reinstalled the hardware and doors, pulled the tape, cleaned up and walked each room to check edges and touch up any spots.

Paint Colors Similar to This White Kitchen and Gray Fireplace

These are similar colors to consider for cabinets, walls and brick like these, not the exact paint colors used in this home’s kitchen and living areas.

Sherwin-Williams Pure White SW 7005

A balanced white close to the finished cabinets and trim. It brightens oak cabinets without looking cold next to granite counters.

Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray SW 7029

A warm greige similar to the new wall color. It ties the kitchen, dining and living rooms together as one open space.

Sherwin-Williams Gauntlet Gray SW 7019

A deeper gray like the painted brick fireplace. It gives the living room a focal point that stands out against lighter walls.

Questions About Painting Oak Cabinets and Trim White

Will oak grain show through white paint?

Oak has deep, open grain, so some texture may show through paint unless the grain is filled first. Many homeowners like a little grain for character. A stain-blocking primer is also important, because oak tannins can bleed through and leave yellow spots in white paint if the wood is not sealed.

Should trim be painted at the same time as kitchen cabinets?

Painting cabinets and trim together often makes sense when both are oak. It gives the rooms one consistent look, and the prep, priming and cleanup happen once. Trim is usually finished in a satin or semi-gloss sheen so it matches the durability of the cabinets and wipes clean.

Can a red brick fireplace be painted gray?

Yes. Brick should be cleaned well and primed with a masonry primer so the gray goes on evenly and sticks to the rough surface. A medium gray hides soot and dust better than white. Painted brick is hard to reverse, so it is worth choosing a color you will like for years.
