Before and After Photos

Two-Story Brick and Siding Home Painted White and Gray with Black Shutters
This two-story home has a brick first floor, siding above, a long front porch and a raised back deck, photographed in Jun 2021. The before photos, taken in winter snow, show red brick, tan siding, bright red shutters and a red front door, with a wood deck and railings that had weathered to a dull tan. One in-progress photo shows a crew member on a ladder at a side window, with the brick already painted white and the shutters already dark. In the after photos, the brick is a clean, bright white on every side, including the tall chimney, the garage walls and the side entry. The siding is now a medium warm gray, and the shutters and front door are black. The garage service door is black as well. Out back, the deck framing and skirting match the gray siding, and dark railings with wood post caps look sharp against the trees and new landscaping.
How We Updated This Brick and Siding Exterior
- We pressure washed the brick, siding, porch and deck to remove dirt, mildew and loose material, then gave everything time to dry fully.
- Windows, doors, light fixtures, the air conditioner and landscaping were covered, and we masked the edges where brick meets siding and trim.
- The red brick was primed with a masonry primer that soaks into the porous surface, which helps the white finish bond and look even.
- Brick walls, the chimney and garage were sprayed and back rolled in white so the paint worked into the mortar joints and rough brick faces.
- The siding was painted a warm gray, with ladders set at each wall to reach the gables and the upper story safely.
- Shutters and the front door went from red to black, with two coats for full coverage over the bright red color underneath.
- We finished the deck framing, pulled the masking, cleaned up and checked every side of the house for missed spots and clean lines.
Paint Colors Similar to This White Brick and Gray Siding
These are similar exterior colors to consider for brick, siding and shutters like these, not the exact colors that were used on this house.
Sherwin-Williams Extra White SW 7006
A crisp, bright white close to the painted brick. It reads clean in full sun and contrasts well with black shutters.
Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray SW 7017
A warm medium gray similar to the new siding. It bridges the white brick below and the brown roof above.
Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258
A true black like the new shutters and front door, a classic match for white brick on a traditional two-story home.
Questions About Painting a Brick and Siding House
Can red brick be painted white on a house exterior?
Yes, as long as the brick is sound and dry. It should be cleaned, allowed to dry, and primed with a masonry primer before the finish coats. Painted brick is very hard to undo, so many homeowners look at photos and test a small area first. It needs repainting over time.
Can vinyl siding be painted a different color?
Vinyl siding can be painted if it is cleaned well and a paint made for vinyl is used. It is important to stay with a color that is not much darker than the original, because dark colors absorb heat and can cause vinyl to warp. A painter can help choose a safe shade.
How do you paint over bright red shutters?
Shutters are cleaned and lightly sanded, and any loose paint is scraped off. A primer helps block the red so it does not show through. Black usually covers red well in two coats. Some painters take shutters off to paint them, while others mask carefully and paint them in place.
