Before and After Photos

Brown Lap Siding House Repainted with Tan Trim and Green Doors
This two story home has lap siding, a covered front porch with turned posts, a three car garage, and a stone chimney. The before photo shows the front with deep reddish brown siding, tan trim around the windows and corners, tan garage doors, and a green double front door. In progress, a crew member stands on the back porch, where the siding is the same rich brown and the porch posts and railings are tan. Green French doors open onto the porch, and the windows have white sashes. The after photo shows the garage side of the house with a fresh, even coat of brown on the siding and gables. The tan trim boards, window surrounds, and corner boards look clean and sharp. A green side door with a glass panel matches the front door. The chimney stone and dark shingle roof stay natural, and the brown privacy fence ties into the house color. The photos were taken in Sep 2020.
How We Repainted This Sided Home in Its Brown and Tan Scheme
- We pressure washed the siding, trim, porch, and garage doors to remove dirt, mildew, and chalky old paint, then let the house dry fully.
- Failed caulk at corner boards, window surrounds, and trim joints was removed and replaced, and any soft or damaged wood was flagged for repair.
- We covered the porch floor, shrubs, light fixtures, and windows, and taped off the doors so the green finish and glass stayed clean.
- Bare spots on the siding and trim were spot primed so the new paint would bond and the color would look even from board to board.
- Two coats of deep brown went on the siding and gables, then we brushed the tan trim, porch posts, railings, and garage door frames by hand.
- We removed the masking, touched up edges where brown meets tan, and walked the property with the homeowner to check every side of the house.
Paint Colors Similar to This Brown Siding and Tan Trim
Here are similar colors to consider for brown siding with tan trim. They are not the exact colors used on this house, so test samples outside.
Sherwin-Williams Van Dyke Brown SW 7041
A deep, warm brown in the same family as this siding, rich enough to hide dust and pair with green or tan doors.
Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige SW 7037
A soft tan close to the trim, porch posts, and garage doors here, giving clear contrast without the brightness of white.
Sherwin-Williams Urbane Bronze SW 7048
A dark bronze brown that could work on shutters, a door, or a fence if you want a cooler partner for brown siding.
Questions About Repainting Siding the Same Color
Is it worth repainting a house the same color?
Yes. Even when the color stays the same, fresh paint restores faded areas, seals bare wood, and protects the siding from moisture. Keeping the same scheme also tends to need fewer coats than a big color change. Many homeowners repaint in the same colors simply to protect the house.
How do I know when my siding needs paint?
Signs include fading on the sunny sides, chalky residue that rubs off on your hand, peeling or cracking, and caulk that has pulled away from trim. Bare or gray wood is a clear sign. Catching these early is usually easier and less costly than waiting for wood damage.
Why do exterior painters pressure wash first?
Washing removes dirt, pollen, mildew, and loose chalky paint that would keep new paint from bonding. It also shows where old paint is failing. After washing, the siding needs time to dry before painting so moisture does not get trapped under the new coat.
