Brick Home with Tan Lap Siding, Cream Trim and a Matching Rear Deck

This two-story brick home has tan lap siding on the upper walls, gables and a tall rear wing, photographed in Jul 2020. In-progress photos show a crew member on an extension ladder painting the siding beside a white window, two ladders set against the brick above the garage doors, and drop cloths spread over the driveway and across the roof shingles where the siding meets the roofline. In the after photos, the siding is an even, warm tan on every side, from the tall side gables to the three-story back wall. Cream covers the fascia, soffits, gutters, porch columns and garage doors. The red brick stays natural, and the dark charcoal shutters, dark front door and white window frames stand out against it. Out back, the raised deck, stair stringers, railings and posts carry the same tan and cream colors, so the deck looks like part of the house above the paver patio.

How We Painted the Siding, Trim and Deck on This Home

  1. We washed the siding, trim and deck to remove dirt, pollen and chalky residue, then let every surface dry before any paint went on.
  2. Drop cloths went over the driveway, patio and roof shingles below the work areas, and we covered shrubs and protected the brick from drips and overspray.
  3. Gaps at window trim, corner boards and siding joints were recaulked, and any loose paint on trim was scraped and sanded smooth.
  4. Bare spots and new caulk lines were spot primed so the finish coats would cover evenly and hold up to sun and rain.
  5. Ladders were set at each wall to reach the gables safely, and the siding got its finish coats board by board for an even look.
  6. The cream trim, fascia, soffits and porch columns were cut in by hand, keeping clean lines where the cream meets the tan and the brick.
  7. Finally we painted the deck railings, posts and stairs, pulled the drop cloths and checked every side of the house for missed spots.

Paint Colors Similar to This Tan Siding and Cream Trim

These are similar exterior shades to consider for siding, trim and shutters like these, not the exact colors used on this home.

Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige SW 7037

A warm tan close to the finished siding. It suits red brick because both share the same earthy, warm undertone.

Sherwin-Williams Creamy SW 7012

A soft cream for trim, soffits and columns. It looks gentler than bright white next to tan siding and natural brick.

Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn SW 7674

A dark charcoal like the shutters on this house. It gives windows definition against both the brick and the tan siding.

Questions About Painting Siding and Trim on a Brick Home

Can fiber cement lap siding be painted?

Yes. Fiber cement takes paint well, and many homes repaint it every several years to refresh faded color. The siding should be cleaned and fully dry first. Caulk at butt joints and trim should be checked and replaced where it has cracked. A quality exterior acrylic paint is the usual choice.

When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior?

Late spring through early fall usually works best. Most exterior paints need mild temperatures and dry weather during application and for some hours after. Painters avoid very hot afternoons on sunny walls, cold nights and rain in the forecast. Morning dew can also slow work on north-facing walls.

Should a deck be painted to match the house?

Matching deck railings, posts and skirting to the house trim or siding makes a raised deck look built in rather than added on. The walking surface often gets a stain or deck coating instead of house paint, since it takes more wear. Railings and posts can usually take the same colors as the house.
