Wraparound Porch on a Brick Cape Cod with White Railings and a Blue-Gray Painted Floor

This brick Cape Cod has three dormers and a long wraparound porch with square columns, white railings, and lattice skirting. The in progress photos show how worn the porch had become. White paint was peeling and chipping off the columns and handrails, and the stair treads and rim boards were a faded, patchy blue gray. A side view shows the long run of railing over the lattice before the new coats went on. As our post at the time said, the crew was getting it done while the fall weather still allowed. In the after photos, the railings, columns, and spindles are a bright, solid white with no chips. The porch floor, stairs, and rim boards are an even blue gray that looks clean against the red brick. The beadboard ceiling is white, and the bright blue front door with white sidelights stands out in the center of the porch. Rocking chairs sit on the lawn in front. The photos were taken in Oct 2019.

How We Repainted This Wraparound Porch

  1. We scraped all loose and peeling paint from the columns, railings, and spindles, then sanded the edges smooth so the old paint lines would not show.
  2. The porch floor, stairs, and rim boards were cleaned and scraped, and we checked for soft or damaged boards before any coating went on.
  3. Bare wood on the railings and floor got an exterior primer, and open joints and cracks in the railing parts were caulked to keep water out.
  4. We brushed two coats of white exterior paint on the columns, top rails, and spindles, working each baluster on all four sides so no bare edges remained.
  5. The floor, stair treads, and rim boards got two coats of blue gray porch and floor paint, rolled and brushed to cover every board edge.
  6. We worked while fall temperatures were still in a safe range for exterior paint, then let the floor dry fully before furniture went back.

Paint Colors Similar to This White Railing and Blue-Gray Porch Floor

These are similar colors to consider for porch railings, a painted floor, and a front door. They are not the exact paints used on this porch.

Sherwin-Williams Morning Fog SW 6255

A soft blue gray close to this porch floor and stair treads, a classic porch color that looks clean beside red brick.

Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White SW 7757

A very bright white for railings, columns, and spindles that keeps a long wraparound porch looking crisp and fresh.

Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue HC-158

A deep blue to consider for a front door if you want something a bit softer than the bright blue on this entry.

Questions About Painting a Porch Floor and Railings

What kind of paint is best for a porch floor?

Porch and floor paints are made to handle foot traffic, furniture, and weather. They are tougher than standard exterior wall paint. Some painters add a fine anti slip additive for stairs. Good prep, including cleaning and priming bare wood, matters as much as the paint itself.

Why does paint peel on porch railings?

Railings take sun, rain, and snow from every side, and water often sits on flat tops and in joints. When moisture gets into the wood, paint loses its grip and peels. Scraping, priming bare spots, and caulking open joints before repainting helps the new finish last longer.

How late in the year can a porch be painted?

It depends on the paint and the weather. Most exterior paints need air and surface temperatures above a set minimum while they dry, plus no rain for a period after. Fall can be a good time, but cold nights and morning dew can slow drying, so timing matters.
