Round Wraparound Porch Ceiling and Floor Painted, Plus a Rear Deck Stained on a Brick Home

This two-story brick home has a long front porch that wraps into a round porch at one corner, lined with tall white columns and white railings. The before photos show a stained wood beadboard ceiling in a honey brown and a plain gray concrete floor with square score lines. One shot was taken after washing, with the concrete still wet. Wide views show ladders, a pressure washer and sprayer jugs on the lawn. In progress, the porch looks like a work zone. Plastic hangs over the brick walls and windows, paper covers the floor, and a sprayer and rolling scaffold sit ready. Part of the ceiling is already light gray while a patch of brown wood remains. In the after photos the beadboard ceiling is a soft pale gray, and the concrete floor is a smooth blue-gray. The columns, railings and front door surround with leaded glass are crisp white. Out back, the deck boards between the brick columns are now a warm, even brown.

How We Refinished This Wraparound Porch and Deck

  1. We pressure washed the concrete porch floor, columns and railings, and cleaned the rear deck boards so every surface was free of dirt and mildew.
  2. Plastic sheeting was hung over the brick walls, windows and entry door, and paper was laid on the floor before any spraying began.
  3. Working from a rolling scaffold, we primed the stained beadboard ceiling with a stain-blocking primer so the brown wood would not bleed through.
  4. The ceiling was sprayed in pale gray and back rolled into the beadboard grooves, then the white columns, railings and door trim were finished.
  5. We caulked gaps along the trim and around the entry surround, then coated the concrete floor with a porch and floor coating in blue-gray.
  6. On the rear deck, we let the washed boards dry, then applied a brown semi-transparent stain board by board, cutting in along the brick columns.
  7. After all coats dried, we removed the plastic and paper, checked each column base and railing and cleaned up the lawn and beds.

Paint Colors Similar to This Porch's Gray Ceiling and White Trim

These are similar colors to consider for a porch with white columns, a pale ceiling and a gray floor, but none is confirmed for this porch.

Sherwin-Williams Extra White SW 7006

A bright white close to these columns, railings and the front door surround, and it looks crisp against red brick.

Sherwin-Williams Crushed Ice SW 7647

A soft, pale gray near the beadboard ceiling, light enough to keep a deep porch bright without looking stark.

Sherwin-Williams Dovetail SW 7018

A mid gray with a slight warmth, similar in feel to the blue-gray porch floor, and it hides dirt well.

Questions About Painting Porch Ceilings and Floors

Can a stained wood porch ceiling be painted?

Yes. It needs cleaning and a stain-blocking primer so tannins and old stain do not bleed through the new color. Beadboard has many grooves, so spraying and back rolling helps fill every gap. A light color, like the pale gray here, brightens a deep porch a lot.

What paint works on a concrete porch floor?

Use a coating made for porch and floor surfaces, not regular wall paint. The concrete must be clean and dry, and old coatings that peel need to come off first. Some floors also need etching. Adding a fine grit to the final coat can help reduce slipping when wet.

Is it better to do the porch and deck at the same time?

Doing both in one visit means one round of washing, masking and setup. It also gives the outside of the home a matched, fresh look. Weather matters for both, since paint and stain need dry surfaces and mild temperatures to dry and cure properly.
