Front Porch Painted with White Railings, Paneled Column Bases, and a Brown Porch Floor
This two story home with tan lap siding has a deep wraparound front porch. The photos show the finished work. Square tapered columns rise from wide paneled bases, and the bases have raised trim frames with a soft tan inside each panel. The railings and spindles are white, and the porch ceiling is a stained wood that adds warmth overhead. A close up of the steps shows the porch floor and stair treads in a reddish brown with white risers and white skirt boards below. The front door is a dark, nearly black color with raised panels, and white trim frames it against the tan siding. The eaves have decorative brackets in white, and the window trim is white too. The contrast between the white railings, tan siding, and brown floor gives the porch a classic, finished look, and red roses and hanging ferns fill in the front. The photos were taken in Jul 2011.
How We Painted This Front Porch and Its Railings
- We cleaned the railings, columns, and porch floor to remove dirt and pollen, then scraped and sanded any rough or peeling spots in the old paint.
- Gaps where the column bases, trim frames, and railings meet were caulked so water could not get into the joints and rot the wood.
- We primed any bare wood on the railings, spindles, and panel frames so the finish coats would bond evenly across every piece.
- The railings, spindles, column base frames, and risers got two coats of white, while the recessed panels on each base were painted tan.
- The porch floor and stair treads were rolled with a reddish brown porch and floor paint, brushing the edges along the siding and column bases.
- We let the floor dry before foot traffic and checked every spindle and column base for drips, thin spots, or missed edges.
Paint Colors Similar to This Porch
These are similar colors to consider for white railings, tan siding, and a dark front door. None of them is the confirmed paint on this 2011 porch job.
Sherwin-Williams Extra White SW 7006
A clean white for railings, spindles, and risers that keeps the porch details crisp against tan siding and a brown floor.
Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige SW 7036
A warm tan similar to the siding and the recessed column panels, a soft middle tone between white trim and the floor.
Sherwin-Williams Caviar SW 6990
A deep off black close to this front door, a strong focal point at the center of a light colored porch.
Questions About Painting a Front Porch
Should porch railings and columns be the same color?
They do not have to be. Many homes use white for railings and trim and a second color for column panels or bases, like the tan panels on this porch. Using two colors highlights the woodwork details. Keeping the railings white usually makes a porch look clean and traditional.
What color works well for a porch floor?
Gray, blue gray, and brown are the most common porch floor colors. Brown and reddish brown hide dirt well and pair with tan or cream siding. Lighter floors can show dirt but stay cooler in the sun. Use a paint made for porches and floors so it holds up to traffic.
How do you keep paint from peeling on porch column bases?
Water is the main cause. Make sure joints are caulked, the bottom edges are sealed, and the base is not sitting in standing water. Priming bare wood before painting helps. Checking the bases each year and touching up small chips keeps moisture from getting in.
