Before and After Photos

Striped Wallpaper and Floral Border Removed, Bedrooms Painted a Cool Gray
These bedrooms were covered in older wallpaper. Two rooms had tan and brown striped paper from floor to ceiling, which made the spaces feel dark and narrow. A third bedroom had peach painted walls with a floral wallpaper border running around the top of the room just below the ceiling. In the before photos, the furniture is grouped in the middle of each room and covered with plastic and moving blankets. In the after photos, the stripes and the border are gone, and every wall is a smooth, even cool gray with a slight lavender cast. The ceilings are a clean flat white and meet the walls in a crisp line. The white closet and bedroom doors, window casings and baseboards look brighter against the gray. With the busy patterns removed, the rooms look larger and calmer, and the dark wood armoire and dresser stand out against the plain walls.
How We Removed the Wallpaper and Painted These Bedrooms
- We moved furniture to the center of each room, covered it with plastic and moving blankets, and laid drop cloths along every wall.
- We scored and soaked the striped wallpaper and the floral border, then peeled and scraped it off without gouging the drywall below.
- We washed every wall to remove leftover wallpaper paste, since dried glue left on drywall can cause new paint to crack or bubble later.
- We patched torn drywall paper and small dents with joint compound, sanded the patches smooth, and sealed the walls with a primer made for this step.
- We painted the ceilings flat white first, then cut in a straight line where the walls meet the ceiling in each bedroom.
- We rolled two coats of cool gray on the walls and touched up the white doors, casings and baseboards where they met the new color.
Paint Colors Similar to These Cool Gray Bedroom Walls
These are similar gray colors to consider for a bedroom after wallpaper removal. They are not the exact color used in these rooms.
Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray SW 7017
A medium gray close to the depth of these walls. It feels calm in a bedroom and pairs well with white doors and dark wood furniture.
Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray HC-170
A cool gray with a soft blue lean. It is a lighter take on this look for bedrooms that get less daylight.
Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52
A pale, cool gray that works in smaller bedrooms. It keeps the room bright while still giving a clear change from tan wallpaper.
Questions About Wallpaper Removal and Painting Bedrooms
Can you paint over wallpaper instead of removing it?
It is possible in some cases, but it often causes problems. Seams can show through, and the paper may bubble or peel when wet paint softens the glue. Removing the paper, cleaning off the paste and priming the wall gives a smoother, longer-lasting finish. Painters can judge which way suits your walls.
Why do walls need primer after wallpaper removal?
Removing wallpaper can leave paste residue and torn drywall paper. A primer made for this step seals the surface and keeps the drywall from bubbling when paint goes on. It also helps the new color look even. Skipping it can lead to cracking, peeling or a blotchy look.
Is a wallpaper border easier to remove than full wallpaper?
A border is smaller, so it usually takes less time. It still needs the same care: soaking, gentle scraping and cleaning off the glue. Borders often leave a strip of different paint color or texture behind, so the full wall is usually repainted to blend everything together.
