Red Brick Ranch Painted White with Black Trim and a Charcoal Front Door
This brick ranch has a deep front porch with brick columns, a decorative brick railing with cutouts, a bay window and a tall chimney. Before the work, the house was a classic red brick with black fascia and gutters, white window sashes and a white painted foundation that had stained and worn in spots near the steps. In the after photos, the brick is painted a clean white on every side, including the chimney, the porch columns and the cutout railing. The foundation below reads crisp and even. Black window trim frames each window, so the white sashes and the bay window stand out against the white brick. The front door is a charcoal gray with a half-moon glass top, and black window boxes, black light fixtures and the black roof edge give the house a sharp, high-contrast look. Mulch beds, young shrubs and a white vinyl fence frame the house in the yard.
How We Painted This Brick Ranch White
- We pressure washed the brick, porch and foundation to remove dirt, chalk and mildew, then let the masonry dry out fully before priming.
- Cracked mortar and gaps around the windows and doors were repaired or caulked so water would not get behind the new white coating.
- Windows, doors, light fixtures, window boxes and landscaping were all covered, and we carefully masked the black trim, gutters and roof edge.
- A masonry primer went on first. It soaks into the porous red brick and helps the white finish bond well and look even.
- The brick was sprayed and back rolled in white, working the paint into the mortar joints and the cutouts in the porch railing.
- Ladders let us reach the chimney safely, and we finished the foundation, the window trim and the front door in their colors.
- We unmasked everything, cleaned up the beds and walkways, and checked each side of the house for thin spots and clean edges.
Paint Colors Similar to This White Brick Ranch
These are similar exterior colors to consider for painted brick, trim and doors like these, not the exact colors used on this ranch.
Sherwin-Williams Pure White SW 7005
A soft, balanced white close to the painted brick. It looks clean in bright sun without turning blue or glaring.
Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258
A true black like the window trim, fascia and window boxes. It gives white brick a sharp, high-contrast outline.
Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn SW 7674
A dark charcoal similar to the front door. It is softer than black and works well beside black trim on white brick.
Questions About Painting a Brick Ranch White
Does painted brick need maintenance?
Painted brick needs some care over time. It may need washing to remove dirt and mildew, and touch ups where paint chips near steps or downspouts. Most painted brick needs repainting after a number of years. Using a breathable masonry paint helps reduce peeling caused by moisture in the brick.
Should mortar be repaired before brick is painted?
Yes. Cracked or loose mortar lets water into the wall, and paint over damaged joints can fail quickly. Small cracks can be patched, while larger problems may need repointing by a mason. Repairs should cure before primer goes on. Sound mortar gives the paint a solid surface.
What sheen is best for painted exterior brick?
Flat or low sheen finishes are common on brick. They hide the uneven surface and look more natural than shiny paint. Many masonry paints are made to let moisture vapor escape, which helps prevent bubbling and peeling. Trim and doors usually get a satin or semi-gloss for durability.
