Before and After Photos

Great Room With a Tray Ceiling and Arched Window Repainted, Plus a White Garage
This job covered two very different spaces in one home. The great room has a tall tray ceiling with recessed lights, white crown molding, an arched window above white French doors, and a marble fireplace surround. The before photo shows warm gold-tan walls and ceiling with a few worn areas under strong light. In the in-progress shot, every sofa, chair and table sits wrapped in plastic, the fireplace is covered, and a tall stepladder stands in the center of the room. In the finished photo, the walls, tray and ceiling carry an even warm tan, and the white crown molding and window trim stand out cleanly. In the garage, the progress photos show plastic over the door tracks, a bagged opener, paper masking along the concrete band and an airless sprayer on the floor. The finished garage walls and ceiling are bright white, which makes the room feel cleaner and lighter.
How We Painted a Tall Tray Ceiling and Sprayed a Garage
- In the great room, we wrapped every piece of furniture and the fireplace surround in plastic and covered the floors. Tall rooms mean more drips, so full coverage matters.
- A tall stepladder let us reach the tray ceiling and the upper walls. We cut in along the white crown molding and around the arched window by hand.
- Walls and ceiling planes were rolled in two coats. Recessed lights and speakers were masked so the finish around them stayed clean.
- In the garage, we covered the door tracks, opener and wall fixtures with plastic, and masked the concrete foundation band with paper and tape.
- We used an airless sprayer on the garage walls and textured ceiling. Spraying gets paint into the texture and covers large plain surfaces faster than rolling.
- Last, we removed the masking, put the opener and fixtures back in service, and walked both spaces to touch up any edges or thin spots.
Paint Colors Similar to This Warm Great Room and White Garage
For warm tan walls or a bright white garage like these, the colors below are similar choices to test, not the exact ones this job used.
Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige SW 7037
A warm beige that offers a softer take on the tan walls here. It suits tall rooms with white crown molding and dark marble.
Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White SW 7757
A bright white that bounces light around a garage like this one. It makes walls and textured ceilings look clean under shop lights.
Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17
A soft warm white for crown molding, window trim and French doors. It pairs well with tan walls without looking stark.
Questions About Painting Tray Ceilings and Garages
Should a tray ceiling be the same color as the walls?
It depends on the look you want. Painting the tray the wall color, as in this room, makes the space feel unified and warm. A lighter ceiling color feels more open, while a darker tray adds drama. White crown molding helps frame either choice.
Is it worth painting the inside of a garage?
For many homeowners, yes. Bare or dingy drywall makes a garage dark and dusty. A coat of bright white paint reflects light, is easier to wipe down, and makes the space feel finished. It also helps if you use the garage as a workshop or storage room.
Why use a sprayer for a garage instead of a roller?
Garage walls and ceilings are large, plain surfaces, often with texture. An airless sprayer covers them evenly and gets paint into the texture. It does need careful masking of doors, tracks and the floor, so we spend time on prep before any spraying starts.
