Yellow Half Bath Walls Patched and Repainted Blue-Gray

This small powder room had warm golden yellow walls, two recessed lights and a dark wood vanity with a cream marble top. The before and in-progress photos show the repair work that came first. The mirror was off the wall, and wide patches of white compound covered the area above the sink where something had been mounted or torn away. More patches ran along the lower walls and corners, and the side wall had large skim-coated sections. A drop cloth covered the vanity and toilet, with tape, putty, sandpaper and tools sitting on top. In the after photo the wall behind the vanity is a calm medium blue-gray, and the side walls are a lighter, airy tone. All the patching has disappeared under the new color. The mirror hooks were left in place, ready for the mirror to go back up, and the dark vanity and brushed nickel faucet now pop against the cool walls.

How We Took This Half Bath From Yellow to Blue-Gray

  1. We removed the mirror and switch plates, then draped the vanity, sink and toilet with drop cloths to keep dust and compound off them.
  2. Damaged areas above the sink and along the walls were skim coated with joint compound to fill tears, holes and uneven spots.
  3. Once dry, the compound was sanded smooth and feathered out at the edges so no ridges would show under paint in the strong downlights.
  4. We primed all of the patched and skim-coated areas. Fresh compound soaks up paint quickly, and primer keeps the final color looking even.
  5. Two coats of blue-gray were rolled on the vanity wall, with a lighter tone on the side walls, cutting in at the ceiling and baseboards.
  6. After the paint dried, we removed the covers, cleaned the vanity top and left the room ready for the mirror and fixtures to return.

Paint Colors Similar to This Blue-Gray Powder Room

These are similar colors to consider for a blue-gray half bath like this one, but none is the exact color on these walls, so test samples in your own lighting.

Sherwin-Williams Morning Fog SW 6255

A medium blue-gray close to the vanity wall here, cool and calm, and it looks good with a dark wood vanity.

Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt SW 6204

A soft gray-green that would suit the side walls in a small bath and keeps the room feeling light.

Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52

A pale, cool gray similar to the lighter side walls, a gentle partner for a stronger blue-gray accent wall.

Questions About Painting a Half Bath

What paint sheen is best for a half bath?

A half bath has no shower, so moisture is lower than in a full bath. Eggshell or satin finishes are common since they wipe clean around the sink and toilet. Satin handles splashes a little better. Flat paint is harder to clean and is usually avoided in bathrooms.

Why do walls need skim coating after removing a mirror?

Glued mirrors, wallpaper and mounted items often tear the drywall paper or leave rough spots when removed. Skim coating fills those areas and gives a smooth surface. Without it, the damage shows clearly through new paint, especially under bright vanity or recessed lights.

Can you go from a warm yellow to a cool blue-gray in one coat?

Usually not. Strong color changes often need primer or two finish coats so the old color does not show through. Patched walls need primer anyway. Planning for full coverage gives a rich, even color instead of a faint tint of the old yellow.
