Navy Accent Wall, Two-Tone Blue Bedroom and Greige Living Room Repaint

This whole-house interior repaint covered several rooms, and each one got its own color plan. In one bedroom, the end wall is now a deep navy, and the door on that wall was painted the same navy so it blends into the color block. The side walls stay a soft greige, with crisp white baseboards and crown. A second bedroom has a two-tone look: a dusty slate blue on the lower half of the walls and light greige above, with a clean horizontal line running around the room. The sliding closet doors and window trim are bright white. A smaller room with three windows has greige walls and a warm brown band across the ceiling beam and side posts. The open living room has greige walls, white trim and clerestory window casings, and a charcoal painted brick fireplace with a natural wood mantel. Oak and parquet floors were left untouched and clean.

How We Painted These Accent and Two-Tone Walls

  1. We moved furniture out of each room, covered the oak and parquet floors, and removed outlet covers and switch plates so paint lines would stay clean around every box.
  2. We filled nail holes and small dings with spackle, sanded the patches smooth, and spot primed them so the new color would not flash or look patchy in daylight.
  3. We caulked open gaps where the baseboards, crown and window casings meet the walls, which gives each room a sharp, finished line between trim and wall color.
  4. In the two-tone bedroom, we measured and marked a level line around the whole room, then taped it so the slate blue and greige meet in one straight band.
  5. We rolled the deep navy accent wall in full, even passes and brushed the door to match, using two coats so the dark color reads solid with no lap marks.
  6. We cut in and rolled the greige walls in every room with two coats, then painted the white trim, closet doors and window casings last with a brush.
  7. We pulled tape while the paint was still fresh, touched up any small spots, reinstalled the covers, and cleaned up so each room was ready to live in.

Paint Colors Similar to This Navy Accent Wall and Slate Blue Wainscot Look

These are similar colors to consider if you like this look. They are not the exact colors used on this job, so test samples on your own walls first.

Benjamin Moore Hale Navy HC-154

A deep, classic navy close to this bedroom accent wall. It works on a full wall and a matching door, and it pairs well with greige and white trim.

Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray SW 7015

A soft gray with a warm lean, similar to the greige on the side walls here. It keeps a room calm next to a bold navy or blue.

Sherwin-Williams Naval SW 6244

Another strong navy option for an accent wall. It looks rich against warm oak floors and bright white baseboards like the ones in these bedrooms.

Questions About Navy Accent Walls and Two-Tone Painted Rooms

Should I paint the door the same color as a navy accent wall?

Painting the door to match helps the wall read as one clean block of color, as in this bedroom. A white door on a navy wall can look choppy. If you want the door to stand out, use a contrasting color on purpose. Either way, use a durable trim enamel on the door because hands touch it every day.

How high should the line be on a two-tone wall?

Many painters place the line around one third of the wall height, close to where a chair rail would sit. Lining it up with a window sill or the bottom of a closet header often looks natural. The key is a level line all the way around the room, measured from the floor and checked with a laser or level.

Do dark colors like navy need more coats?

Dark colors usually need at least two full coats to look even, and sometimes a tinted primer helps over a light wall. Thin coats can show roller marks or a blotchy look. Rolling in steady sections and keeping a wet edge matters more with deep colors than with light ones.
