Two-Story Living Room Accent Wall Painted Bold Blue

This living room has a very tall wall that runs up to a high ceiling, with tall windows on the side wall. The before photo shows the wall in a light builder gray with a few small gray patches, and the painter working from a tall extension ladder. Blue tape runs along the ceiling line, corners and baseboard, and the first band of blue is already cut in along the bottom and the left edge. Drop cloths cover the dark plank floor and a roller tray waits below. In the finished photo, the whole wall is a bold, medium-deep blue with a smooth, even finish from floor to ceiling. The ceiling stays bright white, the side walls stay light gray, and the white baseboard gives the blue a clean bottom edge. The color fills the space and gives the room a clear focal point.

How We Painted a Two-Story Accent Wall Safely and Evenly

  1. We moved furniture away from the wall, covered the floor with drop cloths and taped the baseboard, outlets and side wall corners to protect them from the deep blue.
  2. Small patches and nail holes were filled and spot-primed in gray. A darker primer under bold blue helps the color cover fully in fewer coats.
  3. Using a tall extension ladder, we cut in the ceiling line and both corners by hand. On a high wall, a straight ceiling line is what people notice most.
  4. The open wall was rolled with an extension pole from the floor, working top to bottom in sections and keeping a wet edge so no lap marks showed in the bright window light.
  5. A second full coat went on once the first coat dried. Then we checked the wall from several angles, touched up thin spots and pulled the tape cleanly.

Paint Colors Similar to This Blue Accent Wall

These are similar blues and neutrals to consider for a tall accent wall like this one. They are not the exact color used on this wall.

Sherwin-Williams Naval SW 6244

A deep blue that sits close to this wall in darker light. It gives a tall wall weight without feeling as dark as black.

Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue HC-158

A strong, clear blue in the same family as this accent. It looks bright in sunlight and richer in the evening.

Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray SW 7029

A soft gray for the side walls, like the light gray around this blue wall. It keeps the room calm so the accent stays the focus.

Questions About Painting a Tall Accent Wall

How do painters reach a two-story wall?

Most tall interior walls are painted with an extension ladder, a stable step platform, or a small scaffold, plus extension poles for rolling. The ladder setup depends on the floor, the stairs and nearby windows. Professional crews protect floors under ladder feet and work in a way that keeps everyone safe.

How many coats does a deep blue wall need?

Most deep blues need two full coats over a tinted primer or a gray base. Some bold colors need a third coat to look even, especially over a light wall. Rushing coats can leave streaks, so each coat should dry as long as the label says before the next one goes on.

What sheen is best for a big accent wall?

Flat or matte hides small wall flaws and looks rich in deep colors, which is helpful on a large wall that catches window light. Eggshell is a good choice if the wall gets touched or needs cleaning. Higher sheens show every bump and roller mark on a wall this size.
