Upstairs Balcony and Stair Railing Painted With a Black Handrail and White Spindles
The before photos show an upstairs balcony that overlooks a two-story family room, with golden oak handrails, turned oak newel posts, and an oak shoe rail under white spindles. The family room walls below are a deep slate gray around tall arched windows and a white paneled chimney wall. Canvas drop cloths cover the carpeted landing and stairs, and a wall-mounted oak handrail runs down the stairwell. In the finished photos, the handrails, newel posts, post caps and shoe rails are a deep, soft black with a satin sheen. The white spindles were kept white and look brighter next to the dark wood. The same black continues down the main staircase to the newel posts at the bottom, and the stair skirt board is crisp white. Light gray hallway walls, white six-panel doors and soft beige carpet give the upper level a clean, high-contrast look.
How We Painted This Upstairs Railing, Step by Step
- We laid canvas drop cloths along the landing and down every stair, then taped paper along the carpet edge under the shoe rail.
- The white spindles were taped where they meet the handrail and the shoe rail. That way the black could be cut in tight without touching the white.
- Oak handrails, newel posts and shoe rails were cleaned of hand oils and sanded to break the glossy clear finish. We wiped away all the sanding dust.
- A bonding primer went on every oak surface. On a long balcony rail, we worked in sections so primer and paint could be checked from below as well.
- Two coats of black enamel were brushed on in long strokes with the grain. Post caps and rail ends were done by hand to avoid drips.
- We touched up spindles where needed, painted the stair skirt white, and removed all tape and drop cloths before a final walkthrough of the landing and stairs.
Paint Colors Similar to This Black Handrail and Gray Walls
These are similar colors to consider for a railing and walls like these. They are not the exact paint used on this staircase and balcony.
Sherwin-Williams Caviar SW 6990
A soft black close to these handrails and newel posts. It looks rich against white spindles without feeling harsh.
Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn SW 7674
A deep charcoal in the same range as the family room walls. It frames white trim and tall windows with strong contrast.
Sherwin-Williams Mindful Gray SW 7016
A light, warm gray like the upstairs hallway walls. It sits well between dark accent walls and white doors.
Questions About Painting a Balcony Handrail Black
Can you paint just the handrail and keep the spindles?
Yes. Many homes already have white spindles, so only the oak handrail, posts and shoe rail need paint. The spindles are taped at the top and bottom to keep the lines clean. If the spindles have scuffs, a quick touch-up of white is easy to do at the same time.
Will a painted handrail wear down from hands sliding on it?
Any handrail sees heavy use, but a properly primed and painted rail holds up well. Satin or semi-gloss enamel resists wear better than flat paint. Paint keeps hardening for a few weeks, so gentle use early on helps. Small worn spots can be touched up later.
Should I paint the railing before installing new carpet?
Painting before new carpet goes in is easier and safer for the carpet. Painters can tape right to the floor edge without worrying about drips on new flooring. If carpet is already installed, it can still be done with drop cloths and careful masking along the shoe rail.
