Powder Room Ceiling Painted Dark Brown and a Water Closet with White Wainscoting and Sage Green Walls

This project covered two small bathroom spaces. The first is a powder room with bold floral wallpaper in gold, gray, and lavender tones. The before photos show a flat white ceiling, a single window with white trim, and drop cloths covering the toilet and floor. In the after photo, the ceiling is painted a deep, dark brown that reads almost charcoal in the light. The dark color frames the wallpaper and makes the brass sconce and towel bar look warmer. The second space is a narrow water closet. The before photo shows greige walls and a plain chair rail. In progress, new board and batten panels are in place on the lower wall, still showing gray inside the frames. In the after photo, the wainscoting is crisp white, the upper walls are a soft sage green, and the dark tile floor and black hardware tie it together. The photos were taken in Jun 2025.

How We Painted This Dark Ceiling and New Wainscoting

  1. We covered the toilets, vanity, and floors with drop cloths and taped the top edge of the wallpaper so the ceiling color would not touch the pattern.
  2. In the powder room, we cut a clean line where the ceiling meets the wallpaper by hand, since a dark color shows every wobble at that corner.
  3. The ceiling got two full coats of the dark brown, rolled in one direction, so the flat finish dried even without lap marks or thin spots near the vent.
  4. In the water closet, we filled nail holes in the new board and batten, caulked every seam where boards meet the wall, and sanded the patches smooth.
  5. The wainscoting was primed and then brushed and rolled with white trim enamel, working paint into the inside corners of each panel frame.
  6. We cut in along the top of the chair rail and rolled two coats of sage green on the upper walls, then pulled the tape and cleaned up the floor.

Paint Colors Similar to This Dark Ceiling and Sage Green Wall

Here are similar colors to consider for a dark powder room ceiling or a green and white wainscot. They are not the exact paints used here.

Sherwin-Williams Urbane Bronze SW 7048

A deep brown gray much like this powder room ceiling, dark enough to frame busy wallpaper while still feeling warm with brass fixtures.

Benjamin Moore Saybrook Sage HC-114

A soft muted green close to the upper walls in the water closet, calm against white board and batten and dark marble look tile.

Sherwin-Williams Extra White SW 7006

A clean, bright white that suits new wainscoting and door trim, keeping panel frames crisp next to a green or dark wall color.

Questions About Dark Ceilings and Painted Wainscoting

Will a dark ceiling make a small powder room feel smaller?

Not always. In a small room with strong wallpaper or dark accents, a dark ceiling can make the space feel cozy and finished rather than cramped. It also hides the edges of the room. Good lighting matters, so sconces or a bright fixture help keep a dark ceiling from feeling heavy.

What sheen is best for a bathroom ceiling?

Many painters use a flat or matte finish on ceilings because it hides roller marks and surface flaws. In a bathroom without a shower, flat usually works well. In a full bath with steam, a paint made for bathrooms with mildew resistance is a smart choice, often in a matte or eggshell sheen.

Should new board and batten be caulked before painting?

Yes. Caulking the seams where boards meet each other and the wall closes small gaps and shadows. After caulk, filling nail holes and priming bare wood or MDF gives the paint an even base. These steps make new wainscoting look built in instead of added on.
