Hallway, Bedroom, Walk-In Closet and Bathroom Walls Repainted in Soft Grays and Blue-Gray

This job covered several connected rooms on one floor of a home. The before photo shows a long, narrow hallway with warm tan walls that had a slight sheen, white six-panel doors and white trim. Canvas drop cloths ran the full length of the hall, with a roller tray and paint can ready to go. In progress, a primary bathroom wall and the area around a walk-in closet door show a warm mid gray going on, with a stepladder and drop cloths on the floor. The finished photos show a bedroom painted a soft, cool blue-gray. White plantation shutters cover the window, and the bed and furniture were wrapped in plastic during the work. A hall bathroom is now a medium gray that frames the white tub surround, white toilet and wood vanity. Across the rooms, the white doors, casings and baseboards stayed crisp, so the new wall colors look clean and even.

How We Painted These Hallway, Bedroom and Bath Walls

  1. We laid drop cloths down the full hallway and in each room, and wrapped beds, dressers and the TV in plastic so nothing got spattered.
  2. Switch plates and outlet covers came off, and the nail holes and small dings in each wall were filled with compound and sanded smooth.
  3. We cleaned the bathroom walls first. Hairspray, soap and humidity leave a thin film that can keep fresh paint from sticking well.
  4. Walls were cut in by brush along the ceilings, door casings and baseboards, which keeps the white trim lines sharp in narrow spaces.
  5. Two coats were rolled on in each room: a warm gray in the bathrooms and closet area and a soft blue-gray in the bedroom.
  6. After the paint dried, we reinstalled covers, pulled the plastic and drop cloths and did a final check of every wall in daylight.

Paint Colors Similar to These Gray and Blue-Gray Rooms

These are similar colors to consider for hallways, bedrooms and baths like these, but they are look-alike options, not the confirmed colors from these rooms.

Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray SW 7017

A warm mid gray close to the bathroom and closet walls, and it hides scuffs well in busy spaces.

Sherwin-Williams Morning Fog SW 6255

A soft, cool blue-gray similar to the finished bedroom, calm and restful next to white shutters and trim.

Benjamin Moore Classic Gray OC-23

A light warm gray that would suit a long hallway like this one, brightening it without feeling stark.

Questions About Painting Several Rooms at Once

Should every room in a house be the same color?

Not at all. Many homes use one neutral in hallways and shared spaces, then different colors in bedrooms and baths. Choosing colors with similar undertones, like the grays and blue-gray here, helps rooms flow into each other. Look at samples from the hallway view into each room.

What paint finish is best for hallways?

Hallways take bumps, hands and bags, so eggshell or satin finishes are common. They wipe clean better than flat paint and still look soft. Bathrooms usually do well with satin, since it handles moisture. Trim and doors are often semi-gloss for durability and easy cleaning.

Can you paint while we still live in the home?

Yes. Painters can cover furniture in place and work room by room, as in this home, where beds and dressers were wrapped in plastic. You may lose use of a room for a short time. Good planning keeps at least one bathroom and bedroom available.
