Before and After Photos

Bedroom Walls Repaired After Wallpaper Removal and Painted Light Gray
This bedroom needed wall repair before any paint could go on. The before photo shows walls left rough after wallpaper came off. Torn paper backing, brown patches of exposed drywall facing and smears of old adhesive cover every wall, and the seams show as pale bands. A gray-blue closet door and a step platform sit in the corner. The in-progress photos show the repair stages. One wall has fresh joint compound spread over the damaged areas, a painter rolls primer near the ceiling, and blue tape frames the window and door trim. Another view shows the walls skimmed to an even, flat surface with only faint marks left from the patching. In the after photos, the walls are smooth and painted a soft light gray from the ceiling line to the baseboard. The window wall and the corner by the closet now look even in daylight. The gray-blue doors stayed and pair well with the new wall color.
How We Fixed and Painted These Damaged Bedroom Walls
- We scraped off loose paper backing and leftover bits of wallpaper. Anything left that could bubble or peel under paint had to come off first.
- The walls were washed to remove old wallpaper paste. Adhesive left on drywall can cause new paint to crack or wrinkle, so this step is easy to skip and costly to miss.
- Torn drywall facing was sealed with a primer made for damaged paper surfaces. That keeps the brown paper from bubbling when wet joint compound goes over it.
- We skim coated the walls with joint compound, let it dry and sanded it smooth. Some areas needed a second skim coat to fully hide the damage.
- A coat of primer went over the repaired walls so the finish paint would dry evenly. Primer also shows any spots that still need a touch of compound.
- We cut in along the ceiling, trim and window, then rolled two coats of light gray. Tape came off and the room was vacuumed and cleaned.
Paint Colors Similar to This Light Gray Bedroom
These grays sit close to the finished bedroom walls and doors shown here, offered as similar picks and not the exact color we rolled on.
Sherwin-Williams Mindful Gray SW 7016
A warm mid-light gray close to the finished walls here. It looks calm in a bedroom and hides small wall flaws better than bright white.
Sherwin-Williams Crushed Ice SW 7647
A pale gray with a cool lean for a lighter take on these walls. It keeps a small bedroom bright on cloudy days.
Sherwin-Williams Morning Fog SW 6255
A soft gray-blue near the closet and bedroom doors in this room. It works on doors and trim beside light gray walls.
Questions About Repairing Walls After Wallpaper Removal
Why do walls look so bad after wallpaper is removed?
Wallpaper often pulls off the top paper layer of the drywall, leaving brown, fuzzy patches. Old paste also stays on the wall. If the drywall was never primed before the paper went up, the damage is worse. Those areas need sealing and skim coating before they can be painted.
Can you just paint over torn drywall paper?
Painting straight over torn paper usually makes it worse. Water in the paint can soak in and cause bubbles and peeling. The torn areas need a sealing primer first, then joint compound to smooth them. After sanding and priming, the walls can take paint like normal.
How long does wall repair add to a painting project?
It depends on the damage. Each coat of joint compound needs time to dry before sanding, and some walls need more than one coat. Thicker repairs and humid weather take longer. We walk through the walls first so you know what level of repair the room needs.
