Drywall Patching and Gray Interior Wall Painting in a Newer Home

This job covered a hallway, a doorway into a side room and a bedroom in a newer home. The photos show the repair stage, which is the part most people never see. Dozens of white patches dot the light gray walls where nail holes, dents and dings were filled with compound. Some patches are small dabs, while others are long swipes along corners and outside edges where the drywall had been bumped. On the hallway wall the patches run from near the ceiling down to the baseboard, around the thermostat and the light switches. In the bedroom, a cluster of patches sits low on the wall near an outlet, likely where furniture had rubbed. The baseboards and door casings are white, the hallway has gray wood-look plank floors and the bedroom has charcoal carpet. Once sanded smooth, the walls were painted gray, so the repairs blend away into one even color.

How We Patched and Repainted These Gray Walls

  1. We walked every wall with a bright light at a low angle to find nail holes, dents and corner dings that are hard to see in normal room light.
  2. Each spot was filled with joint compound. Deeper dents and damaged corners got a second pass once the first layer had dried.
  3. We sanded the patches flush with the wall and wiped off the dust, so no ridges would show through the new paint.
  4. The patched areas were spot primed. Bare compound soaks up paint differently than painted drywall, and skipping primer can leave dull spots called flashing.
  5. We cut in by brush along the white baseboards, door casings and ceiling line, and taped carefully around the thermostat and the switch plates.
  6. Two coats of gray were rolled on each wall from corner to corner, which hides patches and gives a single, even finish.

Paint Colors Similar to These Gray Walls

These are similar light grays to consider for walls like these, but sample them on your own walls, since none is the confirmed gray from this job.

Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray SW 7015

A light, balanced gray close to these walls, and it looks clean next to white baseboards and gray plank floors.

Sherwin-Williams Mindful Gray SW 7016

One step deeper than a pale gray, a good pick for a hallway that gets a lot of hand marks and scuffs.

Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52

A soft, cool gray that suits bedrooms with charcoal carpet and keeps the room feeling light and calm.

Questions About Drywall Patching Before Painting

Do patched walls need primer before paint?

Yes, spot priming is a good idea. Joint compound is more porous than painted drywall, so it absorbs paint differently. Without primer, patched spots can look flat or shiny compared with the rest of the wall. Priming the patches helps the final coats look even.

Why repaint the whole wall instead of just the patches?

Touching up small spots on an older paint job rarely blends well, even with the same color. Paint fades and changes slightly over time. Painting the full wall from corner to corner gives one even color and sheen, and the repairs disappear.

How many nail holes and dings is normal?

Quite a few, especially after moving furniture, hanging pictures or living in a home for a while. Newer homes also show settling cracks and bumped corners. Most of these are simple fixes during prep. Larger holes or water damage need more involved drywall repair.
