Wood Kitchen Cabinets Painted Muted Teal with a White Island and Black Pulls
This kitchen started with honey toned wood cabinets in a simple recessed panel style, dark speckled counters, and black stainless appliances. The before photo shows the wood island and perimeter cabinets in the same tone, with light gray walls and wood look floors. In progress, the perimeter cabinets are already a muted teal, some upper doors are open to show the natural wood inside the boxes, and plastic sheeting covers the counters and range. One photo shows our painter installing new black bar pulls on the island, which is now white. In the after photos, the uppers, lowers, and crown molding are a soft teal with a gentle sheen, and the long black pulls give the doors a modern edge. The white island stands out in the middle of the room against the dark counters. The light floors and pale walls keep the teal from feeling heavy. The photos were taken in Dec 2020.
How We Painted These Cabinets Teal, Step by Step
- We covered the counters, range, sink, and floors with plastic sheeting and tape, and removed the doors and drawer fronts for finishing.
- Every cabinet surface was cleaned with a degreaser and scuff sanded so the primer would bond to the wood and its factory finish.
- We primed the boxes, crown molding, doors, and drawer fronts, then filled any small dents or gaps and sanded the patches smooth.
- The perimeter cabinets and crown got two coats of muted teal, and the island got two coats of white so it would read as a separate piece.
- After the finish dried, we rehung the doors, adjusted hinges so the gaps lined up, and drilled for the new black bar pulls on every door and drawer.
- We pulled the plastic, cleaned the counters and floor, and checked every door and drawer front for drips, thin spots, or missed edges.
Paint Colors Similar to These Teal Kitchen Cabinets
These are similar colors to consider for blue green cabinets and a white island. They are not the exact paint used in this kitchen.
Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog SW 9130
A muted gray green that sits close to the softer side of this teal, a calmer option for a full kitchen of cabinets.
Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue HC-158
A deeper blue with gray in it, worth sampling beside a green gray if you want your teal to lean more toward blue.
Sherwin-Williams Snowbound SW 7004
A soft white similar to this island, bright against dark counters and a good match for black bar pulls.
Questions About Painting Kitchen Cabinets Teal
Is teal a good color for kitchen cabinets?
A muted teal or blue green can work well in a kitchen, especially with white, black, or wood accents. Grayed down versions feel calmer and less tied to a trend than bright teal. Testing a sample door in your own light is the best way to see if the color fits.
Should the island be a different color from the cabinets?
It is a common choice. A contrasting island, like white with teal perimeter cabinets, breaks up a large run of color and gives the room a focal point. It also lets you try a bold color on the perimeter while keeping the center of the kitchen light.
How long should painted cabinets cure before heavy use?
Most cabinet paints are dry to the touch within hours, but full curing can take a few days to a few weeks. During that time, gentle use is best. Avoid harsh cleaners and do not let the doors slam. The finish gets harder and more scrub resistant as it cures.
