Cherry and Oak Kitchen Cabinets Painted White, With Doors Sprayed in Our Shop

The main kitchen here had reddish cherry-tone cabinets with arched raised panel doors, a HOME sign above the uppers and a gray patterned tile wall beside the room. The photos in this set also include an oak kitchen with flat panel doors, stainless appliances and gray walls. Both started with warm wood tones that made the rooms feel dark. The in-progress photos show the shop side of the work. Our crew sanded and sprayed doors on tables, and a gray primed arched door leans against the wall. The finished doors then dried flat on tall rolling racks. In the after photos the HOME kitchen has creamy white cabinets with small knobs, so the white granite counters, gray patterned backsplash and black appliances stand out against warm wood floors. The oak kitchen is now bright white with black bar pulls, which pair well with its gray walls and stainless refrigerator.

Our Shop Process for Painting Kitchen Cabinet Doors

  1. We removed every door and drawer front, numbered each piece to its opening and brought them to our shop, where we could control dust and drying.
  2. In the kitchen, we masked the cabinet boxes, countertops, backsplash tile and floors before cleaning and prepping the face frames on site.
  3. Each door was degreased and scuff sanded by hand. Arched and raised panel doors need extra care in the curves and grooves.
  4. We sprayed a stain-blocking primer on the doors. You can see one primed arched door in gray, waiting for its finish coats.
  5. Two finish coats were sprayed on both sides of each door, and pieces dried flat on rolling racks so the paint leveled without runs.
  6. The face frames were primed and painted on site to match, with caulk added where the frames meet the walls and ceiling.
  7. We brought the doors back, rehung and adjusted them, and installed the hardware, including black bar pulls on the doors and drawers in the oak kitchen.

Paint Colors Similar to These White Kitchen Cabinets

These are similar colors to consider for white cabinets next to gray tile and granite, but they are a guide for sampling, not the confirmed colors on these two kitchens.

Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17

A soft, creamy white close to the HOME kitchen cabinets, and it sits well next to white granite with dark speckles.

Sherwin-Williams Extra White SW 7006

A crisp white like the oak kitchen cabinets, a strong match with black bar pulls and stainless appliances.

Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray SW 7017

A warm mid gray similar to the walls in these kitchens, a good backdrop that makes white cabinets look brighter.

Questions About Painting Cabinet Doors in a Shop

Why are cabinet doors painted off site?

A shop setting lets doors be sprayed flat and dry in a clean space with steady temperature. That gives a smoother finish with fewer runs or dust specks. It also keeps most of the mess out of your home. Face frames are usually painted on site since they are attached to the walls.

Can I still use my kitchen while the doors are out?

Usually, yes. With the doors gone, your dishes and food are still on the shelves and easy to reach. Counters may be covered at times during prep and painting on site. Most homeowners keep cooking with a few adjustments while the doors are in the shop.

Is it a good time to change hardware when painting cabinets?

It is a great time. If new pulls use different hole spacing, old holes can be filled and new ones drilled before the doors are painted. That way no patches show. Black bar pulls, like in the oak kitchen here, are a simple way to make white cabinets look current.
