Whole-Home Interior Painting With Coffered Ceilings, Built-Ins and Wainscoting

This large lower level and main floor needed walls, trim and millwork painted around a lot of furniture and finished floors. The in-progress photos show how much protection the job took. Paper covers the wood floors, with tape at every seam. Plastic sheeting seals the cased openings and hallways, the sofas and billiard table are wrapped tight, light fixtures and wall art are bagged, and an airless sprayer sits ready on its cart. In the after photos, the billiard room has a white coffered ceiling with deep beams and white picture-frame wainscoting below taupe greige walls. The family room has white built-ins with arched shelf niches around the TV and white lower cabinet doors. One bedroom is a soft sage green with white crown, baseboards and shutters. A powder room has white beadboard wainscoting under warm beige walls, and a long hallway is a deeper taupe with bright white doors and baseboards over hand-scraped wood floors.

How We Painted This Large Home Interior, Room by Room

  1. We covered the wood floors with paper and taped every seam, so foot traffic, ladders and the sprayer cart would not scratch or spot the finish.
  2. We sealed cased openings and hallways with plastic sheeting and wrapped the sofas, chairs and billiard table to keep dust and spray contained.
  3. We bagged the light fixtures, covered the wall art in place, and taped the wainscoting caps and shutters before any paint was opened.
  4. We filled nail holes in the coffered beams, built-ins and wainscoting panels, then caulked every joint so the white millwork reads as one clean surface.
  5. We sprayed and back-brushed the coffered ceiling, the deep beams and the built-in shelves in white, working carefully inside each arched shelf niche.
  6. We cut in and rolled the walls in each room with two coats, using greige, taupe, sage and beige as planned for each space.
  7. We pulled the plastic and paper, reinstalled the covers, and walked every room to touch up edges along the trim, doors and baseboards.

Paint Colors Similar to These Greige Walls, Sage Bedroom and White Millwork

These are similar colors to consider for a home with white millwork and warm neutral walls. They are not the exact colors used in this house.

Sherwin-Williams Mega Greige SW 7031

A warm taupe greige close to the billiard room, family room and hallway walls. It looks rich next to white wainscoting and dark wood floors.

Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog SW 9130

A muted gray-green similar to the bedroom here. It feels calm and pairs well with white shutters and warm wood furniture.

Sherwin-Williams Pure White SW 7005

A soft white suited to coffered ceilings, built-ins and wainscoting. It stays crisp beside greige walls without looking cold.

Questions About Painting Coffered Ceilings, Built-Ins and Wainscoting

Should coffered ceilings be painted the same white as the trim?

Many homes use the same white on coffered beams and trim so the millwork looks connected. The flat ceiling panels between beams can be the same white or a touch lighter. Some owners paint the panels a soft wall color for contrast. Using one white for beams, built-ins and wainscoting keeps the look consistent.

How do painters protect finished floors and furniture on a big interior job?

They cover floors with paper or rosin board taped at the seams, wrap furniture in plastic, and seal doorways with plastic walls. Fixtures and art are bagged or covered in place. On a large home, this prep can take real time, but it keeps finished surfaces safe while the crew works.

What sheen should I use on built-ins and wainscoting?

Semi-gloss or satin is common on built-ins, wainscoting and trim. These sheens stand up to cleaning and bumps better than flat paint. Walls are usually eggshell or matte, which hides small flaws. The contrast between a soft wall sheen and slightly shinier millwork helps the trim details stand out.
