Open great room and kitchen ceilings and walls painted
Open great room and kitchen ceilings and walls painted. These are in-progress and after photos from the job, taken Feb 2020. This interior painting project was done by Larry Gaytos and the My Personal Painter crew. We are based in Florence, Kentucky, and our work is covered by a 2-year touch-up warranty.
Open Great Room, Dining Area and Kitchen Ceilings and Walls Repainted
This open floor plan joins the great room, dining area and kitchen under one long, flat ceiling. The in-progress photos show how much was covered before painting started. The sofa, kitchen island, dining table, chairs and TV console are all wrapped in plastic. The light fixture, wall clock, mounted TV and a wall shelf are bagged or taped. Canvas drop cloths cover the dark wood floors across the whole space, and a thick-nap roller is held up to show the scale of the ceiling. The finished photos show a smooth, bright white ceiling with even coverage from the great room to the kitchen, without roller marks in the strong window light. The walls are a warm tan with a soft, low sheen. Navy curtains, dark stained window trim, wood doors and the dark kitchen cabinets stand out against the lighter walls and ceiling.
Our Process for Painting a Large Open-Concept Ceiling and Walls
- We moved furniture to the center of each zone and wrapped it in plastic. Light fixtures, the TV, wall clock and shelves were bagged or taped in place.
- Canvas drop cloths were laid wall to wall over the wood floors, overlapping at the seams so no spatter could reach the finish underneath.
- We cut in along the full length of the ceiling where it meets the walls and around every recessed light and fan base before rolling.
- The ceiling was rolled with a thick-nap roller on an extension pole, working in long rows across the room so the paint dried evenly without flashing.
- After the ceiling dried, we cut in and rolled the walls in two coats, keeping crisp lines along stained trim, doors and window casings.
- Last, we pulled all plastic, put furniture back where it started, reinstalled fixtures, and checked the ceiling in daylight for any thin spots.
Paint Colors Similar to This Bright Ceiling and Warm Tan Walls
Here are similar ceiling and wall colors to consider for an open living space like this one. They are not the exact paint colors chosen for this home.
Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White SW 7757
A very bright white for ceilings like this one. It bounces window light deep into a long open room and keeps it from feeling dim.
Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige SW 7037
A warm tan close to these walls. It works with dark stained trim, wood doors and deep cabinets without looking yellow.
Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige SW 7036
A slightly lighter greige for anyone who wants this warm look with a bit less color. It suits navy accents and dark floors.
Questions About Painting Open-Concept Ceilings and Walls
Where do you stop the wall color in an open floor plan?
Most open spaces use one wall color throughout so the rooms flow together. If you want a change, the best stopping points are inside corners, door frames or the edge of a wall. Stopping in the middle of a flat wall is hard to make look clean.
Why do ceilings sometimes show roller marks after painting?
Flat ceilings show marks when paint dries unevenly, when a roller is overloaded, or when edges dry before the next pass. Bright side light from windows makes this easy to see. Rolling in long rows, keeping a wet edge, and using flat ceiling paint all help.
Do we need to move out while the main living area is painted?
Usually not. Painters cover furniture and work in sections so you can still use other parts of the home. Low-odor paints help in lived-in spaces. Most people find it easier if pets and kids stay out of the work area during the day.
