Before and After Photos

Log Home Interior Walls Painted Off White Beneath Pine Ceilings and Timber Beams
This log home has tall vaulted ceilings in knotty pine, heavy timber rafters, and lower walls of horizontal pine planks. The drywall sections between the wood needed fresh paint. The before photo shows the loft with a log railing, a ceiling fan hanging from the beams, and white upper walls under the sloped pine. In progress, one photo looks up at a tall gable wall with a window between two angled beams. Another shows a narrow hallway with pine doors, exposed ceiling joists, a wall sconce, and a drop cloth runner on the floor. The work here was all about clean cut lines where paint meets wood, since the pine, beams, and log rails had to stay untouched. The after photo shows a tall wall beside the log stair railing in a light off white, with plastic still draped over the furniture below. The pale walls make the honey colored wood look warmer and brighter. The photos were taken in Jan 2020.
How We Painted the Walls in This Log Home
- We covered furniture with plastic, laid drop cloth runners through the hallways, and moved items off the loft so we could reach every wall section.
- Nail holes, cracks, and dings in the drywall were filled and sanded, and any patched areas were spot primed so they would not show through the paint.
- Tall ladders and planks were set up to reach the gable walls, working carefully around the log stair railing and the hanging ceiling fans.
- We cut in by hand along every pine board, rafter, and beam, keeping the paint line straight so no color touched the natural wood.
- Two coats of off white were rolled on each wall, working top to bottom so drips would not land on finished areas or the log rails below.
- We pulled the plastic, checked every cut line in daylight and lamp light, and touched up any spots where the wood and paint met unevenly.
Paint Colors Similar to These Off White Walls with Pine
These are similar colors to consider for walls next to pine and timber. They are not the exact paint used in this log home.
Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17
A warm white similar to these walls that keeps honey pine looking rich instead of orange, a common pick in wood heavy homes.
Sherwin-Williams Dover White SW 6385
A creamy off white that softens the contrast between bright drywall and dark beams under a vaulted wood ceiling.
Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist OC-27
A soft light greige for hallways or lower walls if you want a touch more color while still letting the pine stand out.
Questions About Painting Walls in a Log Home
What wall color works best with knotty pine and log beams?
Warm whites and soft creams are popular because they brighten the room without fighting the wood. Very cool or blue whites can make pine look more orange. Soft greiges and muted greens also work. Testing samples next to the wood in your own light is the best way to choose.
How do painters keep paint off exposed beams and wood ceilings?
Careful hand cutting with a quality angled brush is the main method. Tape can help on some edges, but it may not stick well to rough timber or leave a clean line on textured wood. Experienced painters often cut freehand along beams and pine boards for the cleanest result.
Do tall vaulted walls take longer to paint?
Yes, high walls usually take more time because ladders or planks have to be set and moved, and cutting in near the peak is slow work. Safety setup matters. Planning the order of rooms and protecting furniture below helps the job run smoothly in a home with tall ceilings.
