Before and After Photos

New Construction Home Interior Walls Primed and Painted White
This new home was at the bare drywall stage when we arrived. The before photo shows a large room with taped seams and gray mud patches across every wall, blue tape still on the window frames, and a raw plywood subfloor with no trim. In progress, an airless sprayer and hose sit in the hallway, a work bench stands near the front door, and the first open living spaces are already coated in a clean, even white. The finished main room photo shows the left walls, cased openings and window returns painted solid white, with no seams or patches showing through. The fireplace wall at the back still shows its mud marks, waiting for its coats. Ceilings have the same bright white. The house is ready for trim, flooring and the next trades to move in.
Our Process for Painting Walls in a New Construction Home
- We walked the house after drywall finishing and marked any rough seams, nail pops or ridges. Fixing these before primer saves a lot of touch-up later.
- Floors, windows and doors were protected. On bare subfloor we focus on covering window frames, door slabs and anything the builder has already installed.
- A drywall primer was sprayed on all new walls and ceilings. Fresh joint compound and drywall paper soak up paint differently, and primer evens that out.
- After the primer dried, we checked walls under bright work lights. Any flaws that showed up were sanded or filled and spot-primed before the finish coat.
- The finish coat was sprayed and back-rolled for an even texture across walls, openings and window returns. We kept a wet edge so no lap lines would show.
- We cleaned up masking and set aside labeled touch-up paint, so marks from trim carpenters and flooring crews could be fixed at the end.
Paint Colors Similar to These Bright White New Construction Walls
These are similar whites and soft neutrals to consider for new home walls. They are not the exact paint used in this house.
Sherwin-Williams Pure White SW 7005
A clean, balanced white close to these freshly painted walls. It works on walls and ceilings and keeps open rooms bright.
Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17
A soft, slightly warm white. It looks friendly in a new home with lots of windows and pairs well with wood floors once installed.
Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray SW 7029
A popular light greige for buyers who want a color instead of white. It goes on easily over primed drywall like these walls.
Questions About Painting New Construction Drywall
Why does new drywall need primer?
New drywall has two very different surfaces: the paper face and the joint compound over seams and screws. They absorb paint at different rates. Without primer, seams can show through as dull or shiny stripes. A drywall primer seals both surfaces so the finish coat looks even.
Is spraying better than rolling on new construction walls?
Spraying is fast on empty rooms with bare floors, and it covers corners and openings well. Many painters spray and then back-roll for a uniform texture. Rolling alone also works but takes longer. Either way, good prep and even coverage matter more than the tool.
When should painting happen in a new build?
Walls and ceilings are often primed and painted after drywall finishing and before trim, flooring and fixtures. Some builders paint trim after it is installed and do a final touch-up near move-in. The order depends on the builder, but painting before floors goes in avoids a lot of covering and risk.
