Before and After Photos

New Construction Home Interior Primed and Painted From Bare Drywall
This new home was painted from bare, finished drywall. The before photos show the tape joints and screw spots covered in gray joint compound across the walls and ceilings. There is a bonus room with sloped attic ceilings and a single window, a two-story foyer with a tall window above a craftsman-style front door, and an open great room with a kitchen wall roughed in for outlets and cabinets. The stairs are still bare pine treads. In progress, the wood-look plank floors are covered with pink paper taped down in long rows, and a tall telescoping ladder and a step ladder stand ready for the high walls. Five-gallon buckets sit in the middle of the room, and the walls already show a fresh white coat. The after photo shows a room with smooth, even soft white walls and ceiling, a recessed niche above the fireplace, and the fireplace surround still wrapped in plastic for protection.
Our New Construction Painting Process, From Drywall to Finish
- We covered the new plank floors with paper and taped every seam, so ladders, buckets and foot traffic would not scuff or spot the finished floor.
- We walked each room under bright light and marked any drywall flaws, then sanded rough spots and touched up joints before priming.
- We sprayed a drywall primer on the walls and ceilings, which seals the paper and the compound so the finish coat looks even and does not flash.
- We used tall extension and telescoping ladders to reach the two-story foyer and great room walls, and worked carefully around the open stairwell.
- We wrapped the fireplace surround and covered the window frames, then sprayed and back-rolled the ceilings and walls with the soft white finish color.
- We caulked trim joints, painted doors and casings, and did a final walk-through to touch up any marks left by other trades.
Paint Colors Similar to This New Home's Soft White Walls
These are similar soft whites and light neutrals to consider for a new home. They are not the exact colors used in this house.
Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008
A warm, soft white close to the finished walls here. It works across open rooms, tall foyers and bonus rooms in a new build.
Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray SW 7029
A light greige for owners who want a touch more color than white. It pairs well with gray wood-look floors like the ones in this home.
Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray SW 7015
A soft gray that keeps tall walls and sloped ceilings calm. It is a good choice for great rooms with lots of natural light.
Questions About Painting a New Construction Home
Why does new drywall need primer before paint?
Drywall paper and joint compound absorb paint at different rates. Without primer, the joints can show through as dull or shiny stripes, called flashing. A drywall primer seals both surfaces so the finish coat looks even. It also helps the paint bond and can reduce the number of finish coats needed.
When should painting happen in a new build?
Painting usually happens after drywall finishing and before or around flooring and trim, depending on the builder’s schedule. If floors are already in, like in this home, painters cover them carefully. A final touch-up pass is often done near the end, after other trades finish their work.
Is spraying better than rolling for new construction?
Spraying is fast and even on large, empty rooms and tall walls. Many painters spray and then back-roll walls to work the paint into the surface and give a uniform texture. Rolling alone works well too, especially in smaller rooms. The best method depends on the space and the stage of the build.
