New Construction Craftsman Home Painted Inside and Out
This new-build craftsman home mixes red brick, lap siding, a stone base, a bay window with a metal roof and a covered front porch. One in-progress photo shows painters on ladders along the driveway side. The upper siding already carries a gray taupe color, while the lower boards still show the lighter cream base, with a test patch near a window. Drop cloths line the concrete below. Inside, early photos show a vaulted bedroom with white walls and bare wood window trim, and a living area where a transom door and windows still have raw wood casings over paper-covered floors. The finished exterior shows gray taupe siding with white trim, white porch columns and railings, a crisp arched dormer and clean soffits. Inside, the finished rooms include a long white built-in with open cubbies and drawers, an attic room with white walls and angled beams, a bright sitting room over dark floors, and a kitchen with white shaker cabinets. A stained wood mudroom bench with beadboard backing adds warmth.
How We Painted This New Build From Siding to Built-Ins
- Inside, we covered the new floors with paper and tape before any work started. New hardwood and tile are easy to scratch or splatter during construction.
- New drywall was primed so the finish coats would dry evenly. Fresh joint compound and bare paper absorb paint differently without a primer.
- We caulked trim joints and filled nail holes on the casings, baseboards and built-ins, then sanded them smooth before the white trim coats went on.
- White walls, ceilings, built-in shelving and kitchen cabinets each got their own finish coats, with smooth enamel on the trim and cabinetry.
- Outside, we masked windows, stone and brick, then painted the lap siding from the top down. Ladders let the crew reach the upper gables and dormers.
- The trim, soffits, porch columns and railings got bright white. We finished with a walk-around to touch up edges where the siding met the trim.
Paint Colors Similar to This Craftsman Exterior and Interior
For gray taupe siding with white trim and white interiors, these are similar colors worth a sample, not the exact paints on this new build.
Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray SW 7017
A warm gray taupe close to the lap siding on this home. It looks balanced next to red brick, a stone base and bright white trim.
Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace OC-65
A clean white for exterior trim, porch columns and railings like these. It keeps craftsman details sharp against darker siding.
Benjamin Moore Simply White OC-117
A warm white for interior walls, built-ins and shaker cabinets. It suits rooms with dark floors and stained wood accents.
Questions About Painting a New Construction Home
When should the painter start on a new build?
Interior painting usually starts after drywall finishing and trim install, and before final flooring touch-ups and fixtures. Exterior painting follows siding and trim install. We coordinate with the builder so other trades do not damage fresh paint, and we plan a final touch-up pass near the end.
Does new drywall need a primer?
Yes. New drywall has two surfaces, paper and joint compound, that soak up paint differently. Without primer, the seams can show as dull or shiny bands. A drywall primer evens out the surface so the finish coats look uniform across the whole wall.
Should siding be painted before or after it is installed?
Some siding comes pre-primed or pre-finished, and some is painted after install. Painting on the house lets us seal nail heads, cut edges and joints in place. Either way, we check the manufacturer’s guidance and make sure the siding is clean and dry before painting.
